How to Maintain Your TV Aerial for Optimal Performance
Simple maintenance steps to keep your TV aerial performing perfectly and avoid signal loss.
Step-by-Step Guide
- Inspect the aerial visually from ground level
Once or twice a year, look up at your aerial from the garden. Check for bent or missing elements, a visibly twisted or sagging mounting bracket, or white corrosion streaks on the metalwork. Any of these warrant a closer inspection by an engineer.
- Check your signal quality reading
Most Freeview boxes and smart TVs show a signal strength and signal quality reading in the settings menu. Signal quality below 70% during good weather often indicates a deteriorating aerial or cable. Write down the reading and call us if it drops further.
- Keep trees and vegetation clear
Overhanging branches that were not there when the aerial was installed can progressively block the signal path. Trimming back growth on the signal side of the aerial (the direction it points) can recover lost signal without any equipment changes.
- Check cable connections at the TV end
The coaxial cable connection at the back of the TV or set-top box is the most likely point of failure due to repeated handling. If the connector looks corroded or the cable moves loosely, this is the first thing to inspect or replace.
- Monitor for seasonal signal changes
Some signal degradation in winter is normal if your aerial is marginal — cold weather increases cable resistance and wet weather affects some installations. However, significant season-on-season degradation points to physical deterioration requiring an engineer.
- Book an annual check after 10 years
External TV aerials have a typical useful life of 10–15 years depending on location and weather exposure. After 10 years, a professional inspection every 2–3 years is worthwhile. Our engineers can test signal levels and assess component condition during a standard visit.
