CCTV Planning Permission: UK Rules
Most domestic CCTV installations don't need planning permission — but there are important exceptions for listed buildings, conservation areas, and cameras that overlook neighbours. Here's what the rules actually say.
Planning Effective Security Camera Coverage
Effective CCTV coverage starts with a professional site assessment that identifies vulnerable points before any equipment is specified. Poor camera placement — cameras capturing only the top of a subject's head, or facing into bright light sources — produces unusable footage regardless of resolution. Correct positioning is as important as camera specification.
Key Considerations
- Resolution: 4K IP cameras provide the detail needed to identify faces and vehicles at realistic distances
- Night vision: Colour night vision cameras produce far better identification quality than standard infrared after dark
- Wired PoE vs wireless: PoE cameras record continuously — wireless cameras depend on WiFi and batteries that will eventually fail
- Storage: Local NVR provides access without subscription; cloud adds a monthly cost but provides off-site backup
- GDPR: Cameras covering public areas require appropriate privacy notices — our engineers provide guidance at every visit
