Getting the Planning Right Before Installation Starts

The quality of a home technology installation is largely determined before any equipment is purchased or fixed to a wall. Selecting the right mounting position, planning cable routes through walls and ceiling voids, checking signal quality at the intended TV location, and confirming power and connectivity requirements — these decisions, made in advance, are what separate a clean professional installation from one that looks improvised. The most common problems arise from decisions that seemed reasonable at the time: a TV mounted at the wrong height, cables surface-mounted because concealment was not planned for.

Common Installation Considerations

• Wall construction: Plasterboard, masonry, dot-and-dab and metal stud walls all require different fixings — incorrect fixings damage the wall or fail to hold the load safely
• Cable routing: Concealed cables through wall cavities require planning before brackets are fixed
• Signal quality: Check aerial or satellite signal quality before mounting the TV — there is no point in a neat installation with marginal reception
• Future-proofing: Plan for additional equipment or TV points during the initial installation to avoid costly modifications later
