How to Choose the Right Satellite Dish System
Expert guidance on selecting the perfect satellite dish system — Sky, Freesat or foreign satellite.
Step-by-Step Guide
- Decide which satellite system you want
Sky Q and Sky Q Mini for a subscription service with pause and rewind; Freesat for a free-to-air subscription-free service; or a foreign satellite system for international channels. Your choice determines the dish size and LNB type.
- Check your southern sky exposure
All UK satellite dishes point south. Walk around your property and look for a clear view of the southern sky at an elevation of approximately 25–35 degrees (roughly one third of the way up from the horizon). Trees, buildings or chimneys blocking this view will cause signal problems.
- Identify the dish mounting position
The best position combines a clear southern sky view with a practical cable route to your receiver. External walls, roof ridges and eaves brackets are all used depending on your property.
- Consider your receiver location
Know where your Sky Q box or Freesat receiver will be located. This determines the cable run length and whether a cable booster is needed.
- Understand dish size requirements
Standard Sky and Freesat dishes (43cm or 60cm) work in most of England and Wales. Northern Scotland, rural areas with frequent heavy rain and locations with obstructed sky views benefit from larger 90cm dishes.
- For international satellite, research the channels you need
Different international channels broadcast from different satellites at different positions in the sky — Hotbird 13E, Arabsat/Badr 26E, Astra 28.2E. Tell our engineer which channels or countries you want and we will specify the correct dish setup.
