Standard indoor radio antennas frequently suffer from severe signal degradation caused by modern building insulation, thick brickwork, and electronic interference. To unlock the full depth and clarity of your Hi-Fi tuner or digital radio receiver, a dedicated external radio antenna is essential. Our mobile engineers utilize professional signal analyzers to install omnidirectional arrays for maximum channel choice, or high-gain directional antennas to lock onto distant transmitters. We use premium, low-loss coaxial cabling to ensure that the pure, uncompressed audio signal reaches your audio system with zero signal leakage.

Why You Need a Dedicated DAB Aerial

Most radios and hi-fi amplifiers come with a small telescopic or whip aerial that performs adequately in strong signal areas but produces dropouts, static and weak reception elsewhere. A dedicated external DAB aerial — mounted on the roof or in the loft — dramatically improves reception quality across all DAB multiplexes. A dedicated aerial is particularly important for DAB+ stations and for extending signal to whole-home distribution systems.

DAB vs FM — Which Do You Need?

DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) provides access to over 40 BBC and commercial stations including BBC Radio 6, BBC 5 Live, Absolute Radio, Classic FM and hundreds of smaller stations that have no FM equivalent. FM provides analogue transmission from a smaller number of stations — but FM is the preferred format for audiophiles with quality tuners and hi-fi amplifiers, as a properly received FM signal retains greater dynamic range than DAB at lower bit rates. Many customers install combined DAB/FM aerials to future-proof their system.

Loft vs Rooftop DAB Aerial

A rooftop DAB aerial provides the strongest signal and is recommended for properties in weak or medium DAB coverage areas, or where reception through roof tiles produces dropouts. A loft aerial is a clean, maintenance-free option for properties in strong coverage areas — no external aerial visible on the roofline, fully protected from weather. Our engineers assess DAB signal strength at your property before recommending loft or rooftop mounting.

Whole-Home DAB Distribution

A single DAB aerial can feed multiple radios throughout your property via a coaxial cable distribution system — the same principle as distributing a TV aerial signal to multiple rooms. Our engineers design and install whole-home DAB distribution systems with the right amplification and cable routing to maintain signal quality at every output. Ideal for homes where you want radio in the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and study from a single aerial source.

FM Aerials for Hi-Fi and Audiophile Systems

A dedicated FM aerial makes a significant improvement over built-in whip or telescopic aerials for quality FM tuners and hi-fi amplifiers. FM benefits most from a directional aerial pointed at the transmitter — a simple dipole or loop aerial is not a substitute. For audiophile installations we specify and mount a directional FM aerial on a rotator where multiple transmitters serve different favoured stations. Cable quality matters for FM — the same CT100 coaxial we use for TV aerial installations is appropriate for FM runs.

DAB Coverage in the UK

DAB coverage in the UK is provided by a network of transmitters broadcasting the BBC national multiplex, the commercial Digital One multiplex and a series of local multiplexes covering specific regions. Most UK urban areas have excellent DAB coverage. Rural areas and deep valleys may experience weaker signals where a high-gain external aerial is essential. DAB+ (a newer, more efficient encoding format) is used by some newer stations and requires a DAB+ compatible radio to receive.

Pricing and What's Included

  • DAB aerial installation — loft or rooftop — from £89
  • FM aerial installation from £89
  • Combined DAB/FM aerial from £99
  • Whole-home DAB distribution (2–4 outputs) from £149
  • Signal tested on completion — all major DAB multiplexes verified
  • Up to 5-year workmanship guarantee on all aerial installations

Everest Aerials maintains a fully equipped network of mobile audio and radio signal engineers operating across multiple UK counties. Because audio installations require specialized low-loss connections and high-grade brackets, our mobile deployment units carry a comprehensive inventory of dedicated DAB and FM hardware directly in their vans. By dispatching fully stocked local service vehicles, we can guarantee rapid arrival, expert signal matching, and fixed on-site quotes without ever requiring a high-street shop.
